Meridian Service Metropolitan District provides domestic water to the Meridian Ranch Community using a tiered billing schedule. Water rates are based on the quantity of water used, which encourages conservation of water and a more reliable supply for the community.
Generally, here’s how they work. If you are like most people in the area and are water efficient (i.e. don’t overwater your lawn, fix water leaks, use some Xeriscape principles, shut off irrigation during wet periods), you will pay less per gallon for water than those who use excessive amounts or are not as water-efficient. While the majority of the District’s customers DO use water responsibly, those using very high amounts of water will pay more per gallon than those using average water levels.
By staying within the first and second tiers (average household water usage), you can save money by being water efficient. And isn’t that always welcomed during these challenging economic times? Every month all households are charged a Water Resource Fee of $35.03 (capital funds) and a Water Use Fee of $18.31 (cost to ensure water delivery). That’s normal. What’s unusual is that our basic water fees include up to 5,000 gallons of water. Charges for water usage over 5,000 gallons will incrementally increase per the Tier rates listed below.
Here’s how the tiers breakdown:
- Tier 1: Up to 5,000 gallons of water usage per month
Your total fee for the month for up to 5,000 gallons of water, the Water Resource fee, and the Water Use fee would be $53.34
- Tier 2: 5,001 to 10,000 gallons of water per month
$4.82 per thousand gallons over 5,000 gallons, plus the $53.34
- Tier 3: 10,001 to 15,000 gallons of water per month
$5.63 per thousand gallons over 10,000 gallons, in addition to the lower tier rates
- Tier 4: 15,001 to 20,000 gallons of water per month
$7.77 per thousand gallons, over 15,000 gallons, in addition to the lower tier rates
- Tier 5: 20,001 to 30,000 gallons of water per month
$20.90 per thousand gallons, over 20,000 gallons, in addition to the lower tier rates
- Tier 6: Over 30,001 gallons of water per month. Ouch! $25.18 per thousand gallons, over 30,000 gallons, in addition to the lower tier rates
How to Read Your Meter
Locate your water meter in the basement of your home. Make a note of the meter reading. If the water flow indicator is moving, there is water moving through the meter. That means water is being used within the home. Now turn off all your water fixtures in and around your home, and don't use any water for an hour. Then go back and check the reading on the meter, if it has changed, you have a leak!
How to Calculate Your Water Fees
The District's water rates are calculated on a graduated scale, or "tiers". The more water a household uses, the more they pay per thousand gallons. By using tiered rates, the average household doesn't pay the incremental costs for those few homes that use more than their fair share of water. If, however, a household uses over 30,000 gallons of water in one month, their water rate will be comparably higher per thousands of gallons they use over 30,001. It's important to know that, on average, a family of four uses about 5,000 gallons of water in a month.
Example A: Resident uses 4,500 gallons of water
If your household uses 4,500 gallons of water, the two figures needed to calculate the total are, A (Water Resource Fee) and B (Water Use Fee). Since the first 5,000 gallons are already included in the water use fee, it would be calculated as follows:
- Water Resource Fee $35.03
- Water Use Fee $18.31
Total Water Fee for this Month: $53.34
Example B: Resident uses 8,000 gallons of water
In this example, if your household used 8,000 gallons, you would subtract 5,000 (included in the water usage fee) from 8,000 to get 3,000 gallons of water that are invoiced at the Tier 2 rate. Since the water rates are based on the number of thousands of gallons the 3,000 becomes a 3. The 3 then is multiplied by $4.82 to arrive at the cost of the second tier of water usage.
The 8 (actual water usage in thousands of gallons) — 5 (the water usage included in the Water Use Fee in thousands of gallons) = 3 (additional gallons of water used)
- Water Resource Fee $35.03
- Water Use Fee (first 5,000) gallons $18.31
- Fee for next 3,000 gallons (3) x ($4.82 second tier rate) = $14.46
Total Water Fee for this Month: $67.80
These rates were approved by the Board of Directors 12/08/2021 to be effective January 1, 2022 and are subject to change at any time.
